2019 is turning out to be the year of the barbarian, with Savage Sword of Conan #1 being the second monthly title in the last six weeks to feature the world famous character…so far!

Conan the Barbarian #1, a new monthly series published by Marvel Comics made its highly anticipated debut on January 2 of this year. We covered that here, of course!

Today, Marvel Comics doubles down on the pulpy, sword and sorcery stories featuring Robert E. Howard’s muscle-bound, sword-swinging Cimmerian. Although created in 1932, Conan has certainly stood the test of time, appearing a long list of pop culture venues including comic books, film, television, cartoon, novels, video games, and role-playing games.

That brings us to today’s Savage Sword of Conan #1…and the mighty history it entails!

The original Savage Sword of Conan title was first published by Marvel Comics in 1974. As a larger, magazine-sized black and white, monthly periodical, it holds a special place in the hearts of sword and sorcery – and Conan – fans everywhere.

First and foremost, Savage Sword of Conan didn’t have to conform to the restrictive Comics Code Authority that oversaw the publication of comic books. No, this title was certainly more European in flavor. And that meant barbaric violence with plenty of blood, guts, scantily-clad men and women and, of course, sex.

The series was an artistic hit, with legendary science fiction and fantasy illustrators gracing covers and interiors of the magazine. They included Boris Vallejo, Neal Adams, John Buscema, Joe Jusko, Barry Windsor-Smith and Bob Larkin.  The original series lasted for 235 issues over three decades. Almost as long as the Hyborian Age!

Today’s Savage Sword of Conan is the first issue of a five-part tale. It’s written by Gerry Duggan (Deadpool, Infinity Wars), wonderfully illustrated by Ron Garney (Captain America, Thor: God of Thunder, Hulk), and brilliantly coloured by Richard Isanove (The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born, Wolverine: Origin).

Really, the art is a wonder to behold. It’ll make readers remember the best works of Joe Kubert and the Tarzan and Tor era of comic book storytelling – kinetic, emotional, and wonderfully pulpy! You could pick this book up for the art alone – but the story is pretty great, too!

Conan, adrift at sea, is captured by a pirate crew. Little do they know that their prisoner will soon be their doom! On the trail of ancient treasure amidst the fanatical Cult of Koga Thun – this is what you remember best about Conan – or will soon savor for the first time!

Make the run to your local comic book shop and pick up the pulpy swashbuckler (or should that be slashbuckler?) story of Savage Sword of Conan #1!
